As eating challenges go, this is right up there. Think you can do this in one evening?

All you need to do is head to Ladypool Road in Birmingham. Park your car on the north (city) end of the road around Alfred Street/Oldfield Road and begin your journey into Burger heaven.

There’s 14 burgers here so even Mr Beard* would consider it a challenge. In total there are 28 different places on the same road from which to order a burger, from the basic to the downright exquisite. Ridiculous.

Let’s goooooo!

Me You – 186 Ladypool Road, B12 8JS

Let’s go Khabib! Yes, here you gotta order the Khabib Burger, a high quality Irish beef patty with grilled chicken burger added. It’s a big one so get that drink to help you get settled into this challenge. Enjoy.

Infernoz – 188 Ladypool Road, B12 8JS

You’ve got to, you just have to get the Double BBQ Smash Burger – it’s unusual for anyone to serve smashed burgers with BBQ flavouring but these nice people do so get one and savour it.

Lahore Village – 204 Ladypool Rd, B12 8JS

Credit to these guys, they were the earliest to sell McD style burgers in the very late 80s/early 90s on Ladypool road. So you have to reminisce with me and get the very standard Beef Burger. Get the double patty as I reckon it’s still only £3. Very ordinary but an easy one to wolf down on this crazy journey.

Rockaburger – 201 Ladypool Road, B12 8LG

Felling stuffed already? I can help. Order the Get Stuffed’ Burger and have fun with a decent sized Beef Patty, Chicken Rashers and a Fried Egg! Enjoy the American Diner ambience before you head to the next place.

Dixys – 213 Ladypool Rd, B12 8LG

Dixys is legendary is Birmimgham, there must be a dozen dotted around the city. Here there really is only 1 choice, the popular Supreme Chicken Fillet Burger. It comes with a hash brown and for the first time we’re switching to chicken – but not the last!

Phat Buns – 264 Ladypool Road, B12 8JU

Phat Buns provides a vast array of customisations to its burgers. We like that, so here we present what we consider the best combo: Brioche Bun, 8oz Angus Beef, Caramelised Onions, Turkey Rashers, Cheese, Tomato, Lettuce. We don’t like gherkins so add them if you do! It’s not the biggest burger in this challenge but it will be one of the tastiest.

SlamBurger – 270 Ladypool Road,  B12 8JU

Out of nowhere Slamburger appeared on Ladypool road and upped the ante in terms of price/quality ratios. Some consider Slam to be the best of burgers, let us know what you think after you’ve tried the BigSlam (a nod to the famous BigMac). There’s a lot of choice here so if you fancy a different choice we say take your pick!

Pepes – 267 Ladypool Road, B12 8LF

A chain restaurant with over 160 outlets, Pepes is very much chicken and piri piri focussed. The must have here is the Chicken XL, the bap/barm is soft unlike anything else served by anyone else.

Burger Joint – 300 Ladypool Rd, B12 8JY

New kid on the block (although a newer one, 3in1 is appearing soon) so let’s play it safe and go for the Beef Las Vegas Burger to get those Vegas vibes going. Does Ladypool road not remind you of the infamous Vegas strip? No? Really?

Project Bun – 304 Ladypool Rd, B12 8JY

These guys seem fun, they much like Phat Buns let you fully customise every aspect of your burger – a bit like managing a Project I suppose(!). Our reccy is this, by default comes with the special PB sauce:

  • French Brioche
  • Beef Patty
  • Fried Egg
  • Mayo, Grilled Onions and Jalapeno

Flamin Patties – 332 Ladypool Road

We like Flammin Patties, we really do and we really love the Flamin Patty Burger – there is really no other choice. A 3 stack patty burger oozing with their secret burger sauce. It’s delish. Take a seat and enjoy, just watch out for the delivery drivers!

Chickaros – 400 Ladypool Road, B12 8JZ

The Belly Buster. That’s it, that’s the one. Don’t need to say anymore, order it! Eat it!

TruBurger – 369 Ladypool Rd, B12 8LA

Can we call Truburger a pioneer? Why you ask? Their status as the first proper gourmet, high quality burger provider on Ladypool road is cemented in history. Considering they still maintain the high quality and popularity speaks for itself. The choice here is the Tru Tower, savour it. Few burgers are made better and the Tru sauce is the kicker.

Burger Bar – 383 Ladypool Road, B12 8LA

Another NKOTB, we’ve not tried them (shock, horror). Yet. So we asked for recommendations and the winner is:

Burger Barbaric

Sounds ominous, especially as the final burger on this crawl. Will you get through it? We wish you the best.

Coming Soon

There will be a 15th member to this list when it opens:

3in1 Burger – 314 Ladypool Road

Previously running out of a mechanic autoshop in North Brum, these mechanics turned burger pioneers are making an entrance in a highly competitive geography. They’ll be on the official list soon.

Who Missed Out?

There’s a few places we missed out. Yes. Really. There’s so much choice it’s frankly ridiculous. Here’s more places you can get a reasonably priced burger from on Ladypool Road:

Mak Halal

Bennies Burgers

Bobbys

Kebabish

Grillz

Khans Fish Bar

Toros

Fargos

Grill Thrill

Chicken Spice

UK Fried Chicken

Manjaros

The Firm (we do NOT recommend)

Karachi (current info is that it is CLOSED)

  1. I’ve never been a fan of beef, I much prefer the taste of lamb burgers but they are very hard to find these days. My favourite TruBurger have stopped doing them and they are conspicuous by their absence in the list above!
