Personal bug-bear of mine, having recently purchased yet another flat screen TV I am seriously annoyed by the lack of decent priced, and reasonable TV cabinets.

Those from the likes of Argos, Homebase (same organisation really), John Lewis, Currys/PC World are totally over-priced, uninspiring and seriously dull. I did get one from the first place I mentioned, but its DIY construction was so rubbish that even though it is functional right now each time I see it I feel like reaching for Sledgy (yup, that’s the docile name for my sledge hammer)!

So, I decided to take a different tack. Who provides reasonably cheap furniture, at almost throwaway prices? Furniture that is well built, easy to DIY, consistent and flexible? IKEA of course. But then looking at their TV cabinets i got the same feeling. Until I changed tack, and decided to look for a piece of furniture that wasn’t labelled as a TV cabinet but could function as one!
So the low down is here, and they come in a number of different configurations and colours:

BESTA 60x40x64 £25 (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00134052/)
EXPEDIT 79×79 £35 (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80135298/)
LACK (the good old reliable one) 90×55 £16 (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/40104270/)
MOSJO 90x40x38 £30 (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/90144730/)

There is of course a LACK TV Bench and a BESTA TV Bench, search for them on the GB site.

Personlly I got the BESTA (Shelve unit NOT TV Bench) as I needed to house a small ATX PC and a NAS drive in the lower half, so it was ideal. It came with 2 flexible shelves, I’m only using one. Upper shelf contains my Sky box, a BD player and still has space for a compact Console. The REAL reason for getting the BESTA however was the flexible add-ons, you can add another BESTA to the side, buy a solid door or a glass door to cover the lower half, a glass shelf instead of wood. There were more options but can’t remember them right now!

Oh, I did have to punch some cable holes in the back panel – keep that in mind with the BESTA!

2 thought on “TV Cabinets….why so expensive?”
  1. One of the reasons tv cabinets are more expensive is because they have to be designed to take the weight of a large tv. Admittedly this isn’t as much as the old crt’s but still, a but of glue and a couple of nails wood be pretty risky. Alright, it doesn’t even come close to explaining the huge price difference but something to keep in mind when picking something to hold about a grands worth of equipment. Also esthetics, this thing has pride of place in your main room, you may get a cosy glow from how much you saved but the wife will be thinking “that is sooo ugly, looks like some

  2. Good write-?p, I’m normal visitor of one?s web site, mainta?n from the excellent operate, and
