So, I get an e-mail from Google stating that my Google Wallet has been suspended as they cannot verify my identity. So I got to Google Wallet online and see the following:

verify

Right, OK. So ‘How exactly do I verify my identity to a faceless dominant organisation like Google?’. It’s not like I can pop into the local branch and do that. Anyway, I decide to look for a contact number so I can ask some questions. I find a simple Contact Us button on the verification page….but, weirdly, each time I click it I get sent back to the ‘Account Verification’ page – i’m in a loop & that is frankly ridiculous.

I decide to see what ID they need to verify my identity, hmmmm – Government ID eh?

Gov ID

Well, NO! I’m not giving you any of that. Who are ya???!! But that’s not all, they still want to verify your address so next they ask for:

address ID

NO bloody WAY Google. I’m not giving you my identity documents. Sorry. But. I. Don’t.Trust.You.

Regardless of their security and privacy policy stating how ‘we take seriously your data security and privacy’? Sure, take it seriously. I’d rather I could trust you to keep it safe rather than just take a blinkin serious stance on it.

So bye bye Google Wallet, you did well while you worked. Shame you didn’t accept PayPal.

Oh wait. Just realised. Google Wallet wants to BE PayPal. Good Luck with that Larry, Sergey & Eric.

[If you verify your identity first, then I might consider sending you mine :]

  1. So, alike hundreds of UK residents I find myself in this same loop.

I have £60 ‘gift card ‘ credit on my google play account / google wallet. To spend this, I now need to send over proof of ID. Perhaps foolishly, or eagerly so I can buy the apps I intended to, I do so. I am now days later and have heard nothing.

15 emails so far sent from me, with broad automatic replies back from Google support.

Without the use of Google Play on my android, I may as well have a Nokia from the 90’s. Most frustrating thing is, if I close my account I cannot reclaim the £60 gift voucher.

When I upgrade my phone I’m moving to Apple. I dread it, but Google has gone mental with power & frankly it’s feeding the NSA my data from the UK I don’t want them to have.

    1. Hi Darren, thanks for commenting.

I am totally NOT suprised that they have NOT verified your account. I never did bother sending them anything, in fact I use the Amazon App Store to purchase any of the more popular Apps or Games that I want on my Android phone!

It really is a Brick Wall with Google, such a large organisation that simply cannot respond at an individual level. None of my requests for further information as to what the problem was with my verification ever garnered a reply.

I fear your £60 gift card will leave you tearing your hair out as you try and get it sorted. Is there no other way to redeem its value?

      Regards, Zulf
